Categories
There are five competition categories: Belly Dancer of the Year, Duet of the Year, Fusion Dancer of the Year, Grand Dancer of the Year, and Troupe of the Year.
Belly Dancer of the Year Preliminaries
Time Limit: 7 minutes maximum
Entry Fee: $100.00
This is a solo category open to dancers whose work is rooted in dances from the countries and regions belly dance is from. This includes, but is not limited to, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey, as well as American cabaret styles developed in the United States. Folkloric forms from these regions also fall into this category. The Preliminaries, scheduled for Saturday evening, will be on stage to CD. Competitors must use Middle Eastern or North African music, or music that is clearly inspired by the region. Eight finalists will be selected at the end of the Preliminaries to go on to the Live Music Finals on Sunday evening. Previous winners may not enter this category again.
Belly Dancer of the Year Finals
*** Finger cymbals are required in the Finals ***
Set Length for Live Music Finals: Approximately 6-8 minutes
Prize: Title, trophy, $500 cash, and invitation to perform and teach a workshop at a future event.
The Finals will be to live music in a club/cabaret setting, and the finalists will not know their music ahead of time. Sets will be approximately 6-8 minutes in length, at the musicians' discretion, and include a fast piece, a slow piece, and a drum solo. Finalists are required to participate in the Finals in order to be eligible to place in the category. Musicians and venue will be announced as soon as they are confirmed. All winners will be selected from the Finals round, based on adding the adjusted scores from the Preliminaries and Finals.
Fusion Dancer of the Year
Time Limit: 7 minutes maximum
Entry Fee: $100.00
Prize: Title, trophy, and $500 cash.
This is a solo category open to dancers who perform belly dance fused with other dance genres. Content must be at least 50% belly dance. American Tribal, Improvisational Tribal, and Tribal Fusion styles of belly dance are all welcome in this category. Dancers may use any music they deem appropriate to their performances. There is no restriction on the genres fused, however, be sure to refer to the general guidelines for all BDOY performances. Previous winners may not enter this category again.
Grand Dancer of the Year

Age Requirement: at least 50 years of age at the time of performance
Prize: Title, trophy, and $250 cash.
This category is open to dancers aged 50 and up who perform any style of belly dance. This category is open to duets who perform all styles of belly dance. This includes work is rooted in dances from the countries and regions belly dance is from, American cabaret styles developed in the United States, folkloric forms, American Tribal Style, Improvisational Tribal Style, Tribal Fusion, and Belly Dance Fusion. Belly Dance Fusion is defined as belly dance fused with other dance genres, and content must be at least 50% belly dance. Dancers who perform cabaret, folkloric, raks sharki, etc., must use Middle Eastern or North African music, or music that is clearly inspired by the region. Dancers who perform ATS, ITS, Tribal Fusion, and Belly Dance Fusion may use any music they deem appropriate for their performance. Two dancers must be dancing at all times. Normal breaks between dance numbers are permitted. Solos are not permitted in this category. Previous winners may enter this category again if they change duet partners.
Troupe of the Year
Time Limit: 9 minutes maximum
Entry Fee: $140.00 for the first 3 dancers and $20 for each additional dancer
Prize: Title, trophy, $250 cash, and invitation to perform at a future event.
This category is open to all styles of belly dance. This includes, but is not limited to, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey, as well as American cabaret styles developed in the United States. Folkloric forms from these regions also fall into this category. This category is also open to troupes who perform belly dance fused with other dance genres. Content must be at least 50% belly dance. American Tribal, Improvisational Tribal, Tribal Fusion, and belly dance fusion styles are all welcome in this category. There is no restriction on the genres fused, however, be sure to refer to the general guidelines for all BDOY performances. At least three dancers must be on stage at all times during the performance. No solos or duets are permitted in this category. Not all the dancers on the stage must be dancing at any given time. Normal breaks between dance numbers are permitted. Musical instruments may be played, but musicians must also perform as dancers. Competitors may use any music they deem appropriate to their performances. Previous winners may enter this category again if they do not compete for two years and change their troupe membership by at least 30%.

General Guidelines
Age & Gender
All genders welcome in all categories. At the time of performance, competitors in the Grand Dancer category must be 50 years of age. Competitors in the Belly Dancer of the Year and Fusion Belly Dancer of the Year categories must be at least 16 years of age. There is no age restriction for the Duet and Troupe categories. However, competitors under the age of 16 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the Liability Release. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult backstage.
Cancellations & Refunds
You will receive a full refund of entry fees if you withdraw within seven (7) days of registering for the competition. After seven (7) days, there will be no refund of entry fees. No exceptions. However, you may apply your fees to another category. This type of policy is industry-standard; if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us. Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to cancel.
Category Minimum Requirements & Cancellations
Duet, Fusion Dancer, Fusion Troupe, Grand Dancer, and Troupe must have a minimum of three (3) entries. Belly Dancer of the Year must have a minimum of five (5) dancers. If Duet does not have the minimum required entries, it may be combined with the troupes. If a duet or troupe is not comfortable competing in a combined category, they will have the option of canceling their spot and receiving a refund of entry fees. Minimum entry requirements must be met by May 15 or risk cancellation. If a category is canceled completely, and not combined with another category, all entry fees in that category will be refunded in full.
Competition Waiting List
If a category is full, you may register for the waiting list and we will contact you as soon as a spot becomes available. If you sign up for the waiting list, but later decide to cancel from the waiting list, please notify us via email.
Congeniality
There will be a congeniality award in each category. As of 2018, congeniality in each category is chosen by event volunteers and the production team.
Costuming
Costuming should reflect the style of dance that is performed. Please read the guidelines on the Judges page for additional information. Costuming must also be appropriate for children and families. And, please be careful with high skirt slits!
Judges
A panel of judges is selected by BDOY Officials and includes solo dancers, troupe dancers, and musicians. Judges are selected to reflect the styles of dance that they are judging. All BDOY judges remain anonymous. This is critical to maintaining the fairness and integrity of the competition. If you approach a judge, score keeper, or BDOY volunteer and request information regarding the identity of the judges, you will be disqualified and/or stripped of your title. Decisions made by the judging panel are final and may not be appealed. The judging panel is announced prior to the competition and listed on the Judges page. Judges may compete, however, if they choose to compete in one of the afternoon categories, they will not be able to judge any of the other categories presented during that segment of the competition.
Music: Technical Requirements
All competitors must email their in advance of the competition. Multiple songs must be combined into one track. The file name must include stage name and category name. We strongly recommend you bring a back up on CD, flash drive, or mp3 player, however, we will not ask you for this unless there is an unexpected technical problem at the event. Music files must be in the correct format. Make sure you are creating music files and not data files. We cannot pause and restart or fade your music mid-performance. Any pauses or fading must be included in your finished music file. Please remember to "normalize" (or similar) all tracks so they play at the same level. This is usually the default in iTunes, but music editing software may require to to select this option. We will send you information about submitting music instructions closer to the event. You will have the following options:
Music: Genre Requirements
Music genre requirements are based on the style you are performing. Please see the requirements in the category descriptions above and read the judging guidelines carefully. Judges do consider music choice when evaluating your performance.
Performance Standard
The venue is an all ages community space and BDOY is an all ages community event. All performances must be family and child appropriate. This means no nudity, no overtly sexual presentations, and no depictions of violence. If your performance is deemed inappropriate, the lights and your music will be faded out. You will be disqualified and we will introduce the next competitor.
Photos & DVD of Your Performance
The authorized BDOY photographer will take multiple photos of each performance. Each performance will also be recorded on DVD. We will send you details about ordering photos and DVDs closer to the event. Besides coverage by local press and occasional snapshots taken by BDOY staff, no additional photography or videography is allowed during the performances.
Props
No fire or incense is allowed inside the venue(s). Live animals may not be used as props. Solo categories may not include a second person. Competitors may play musical instruments (finger cymbals, drum, riq, def, etc.) while dancing. You must bring all the props you need to the competition; extra props are not available for use at the venue. You are responsible for any props you bring to the competition. There will be folks backstage available to help you place your props if needed. We will send you information about submitting details about props approximately one month before the event.
Scoring & Comments
Copies of Your Scores and Comments
Competitors will receive a hard copy of their scores at the end of the competition. We will also try to provide a copy of the judges' comments after the competition. However, they often take quite a bit of time to enter accurately. If we cannot prepare copies in time, comments will be emailed to competitors within two weeks of the competition.
Stage Lighting
Only basic white stage lighting choices are available to all competitors during the stage competition. Any additional color lighting is at the discretion of the producer and lighting technician. There is no spotlight and you must perform on the stage. Belly Dancer of the Year Finalists can expect nightclub-style or more intimate lighting. We will send you information about submitting your stage lighting instructions closer to the event. You will have the following options:
Tickets
Registration fees include entry to the stage competition. Dancers who enter the Belly Dancer of the Year category do not need to purchase tickets to the Live Music Finals.
Timing
Venues are rented based largely on performance time limits and the number of competitors in each category. It is crucial that the competition runs on time. Each performance will be timed by the score keepers. Timing commences with the start of the music and ends when the dancer(s) exits the stage or the music stops, whichever comes last. There is a 5 point penalty for every second a performance exceeds the time limit. Please be ready in the wings in plenty of time. If you are not in the wings during the performance before yours, we will make every effort to find you, however, any dancer(s) not ready to perform when announced will be disqualified.

Scoring & Comments
- Each judge will score each performance on six different criteria on a scale of 1-10. There are 7 criteria for the Live Music Finals. There are only whole points, no half points. The highest and lowest total scores will be dropped, resulting in adjusted final scores. We instruct the judges to consider 6 to be average and to go up or down from there. They are free to use the entire 10 point scale.
- Placement in the Belly Dancer of the Year category will be determined by adding the adjusted scores from both the Preliminaries and Live Music Finals.
- The judges are also asked to provide comments about each performance. BDOY reserves the right to remove any comments deemed inappropriate. BDOY also reserves the right to remove a judge's entire score set if deemed necessary.
- BDOY considers all scores and comments to be confidential and will not share or publish this information.
- Ties for first place will be broken by the judges. If there is a tie for a runner up position, the score keepers will add back the highest and lowest scores for the tied competitors. If this does not break the tie, the judges will be asked to break the tie.
Copies of Your Scores and Comments

Please take some time to read the following General Liability, Acknowledgement, and Releases before registering to compete. All competitors, including each member of every duet and troupe, will be required to sign a hard copy upon checking in at the competition.

Please be advised that you are participating in the 2023 Belly Dancer of the Year Competition (hereinafter, “BDOY”) at your own risk. You are solely responsible for any and all expenses related to injuries and/or loss or damage of personal property incurred in connection with your participation in BDOY.
Acknowledgement and Releases:
By signing this document, I acknowledge that I am participating in BDOY at my own will and at my own risk.
I represent that I am in good health and am physically able to participate in BDOY. Should I be injured during BDOY, I hereby grant permission to BDOY and its officials to arrange for my transportation to a hospital and/or administer immediate first aid as deemed necessary.
I agree to hold the venue, city, Jennifer Cooper, Belly Dancer of the Year, its directors, officers, employees, representatives, and agents harmless from and against any and all claims, losses, damages, expenses (including attorneys’ fees and all court and litigation costs) and liability resulting from injury of any person or damage to or loss of any property arising out of my participation, or lack thereof, in BDOY.
I hereby authorize Belly Dancer of the Year to use my name and/or likeness, by way of photograph and/or biography, to publicize BDOY in any manner deemed appropriate by BDOY officials.
I acknowledge and agree that any videos and/or motion pictures taken of me by BDOY officials during or in connection with BDOY, whether captured by way of film, or digital media, are the irrevocable and exclusive property of Belly Dancer of the Year. I agree that digital photographs taken of me by the authorized BDOY photographer will be non-exclusively licensed to both me and to Belly Dancer of the Year. I further consent that the scope of allowed uses is limited to no use whatsoever involving the slandering of any person or party.

I acknowledge and agree that any videos and/or motion pictures taken of me by BDOY officials during or in connection with BDOY, whether captured by way of film, or digital media, are the irrevocable and exclusive property of Belly Dancer of the Year. I agree that digital photographs taken of me by the authorized BDOY photographer will be non-exclusively licensed to both me and to Belly Dancer of the Year. I further consent that the scope of allowed uses is limited to no use whatsoever involving the slandering of any person or party.
